Two Arrested for Illegal Sand Mining on Phalguni Riverbanks

Mangaluru: In a crackdown on illegal sand extraction, Kavoor police arrested two men at Manjalpade near the Phalguni River. The accused, Lara D’Souza (28) and Thiyadore D’Souza (56), were caught during a police raid conducted following a tip-off. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, laborers involved in the extraction fled the scene, while one lorry driver managed to escape with the vehicle. However, the police successfully apprehended two suspects and seized a lorry laden with illegally mined sand.

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of illegal sand mining in the region, which poses serious environmental threats. Authorities have registered a case at the Kavoor police station and are continuing their investigation. Efforts are underway to track down other individuals involved in the operation, including the escaped driver.
