At a time when the influence of modernity is causing the gradual decline of the Tulu language, bringing together Tulu enthusiasts and intellectuals under one platform for a day-long discourse is no easy feat. Yet, the Tulu Cultural Research Foundation (R.) successfully organized such an event on April 13 at Katapady in Udupi district, uniting passionate youth and seasoned voices of Tulu. Here are some highlights from the "Tulu Nadu Conclave – 2025".

We Have No Place in the History Written by Elites; Our Traditions Are Now Stage Performances

Dr. Tukaram Poojary of the Rani Abbakka Study Center called for a re-writing of Tulu Nadu’s history—not as the history of rulers, but of common Tulu people. Highlighting that all Dravidian languages except Tulu have official states, he said it is not wrong for Tuluvas to demand a state of their own. He noted that the idea of a Tulu state has existed for over 500 years, even in folk forms like Panjurli Paardana. He also gave insightful information on the “Appekatt” community system. He expressed concern that Aati (a traditionally solemn month) has now been reduced to mere stage shows, detached from its true meaning of hardship and humility.

Korragajja Is Not Just a Spirit – Misinterpretation Is Disrespect

Babu Koraga Pangala clarified misconceptions around the Koraga community, stating there are only four main subgroups instead of the commonly cited 10-16. He discussed how the Koraga language is on the brink of extinction and how the community has blended into Kannada and Tulu, losing its linguistic identity. He emphasized that calling "Koraga Taniya" as "Korragajja" is incorrect, as the term “Ajja” (grandfather) is misleading for a deity who became immortal in his youth. He condemned current worship practices where alcohol and commercial betel leaves (beeda) are offered, urging a return to traditional offerings like raw betel leaves and lime.

Tulu Nadu Youth Conference

As part of the conclave, the Tulu Nadu Youth Conference brought together eminent figures from the region. Kapu MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty addressed the gathering, reaffirming that “Tulu is the language of our hearts and our mother tongue,” and promised his full support in promoting Tulu language in legislative platforms.

Tuluvas are natural-born warriors, and their culture and contributions are permanent fixtures of Tulu Nadu’s legacy. The fact that Tulu hasn’t received state recognition or administrative importance is a reflection of the lack of political will; Orator Srikant Shetty powerfully presented on ancient Tulu inscriptions, literature, and the idea of a Tulu state.

New Literary Releases and Honoring Contributions

The 10th Tulu literary work “Patth” by author Kushalakshi V. Kulal was officially launched by Tulu-Kannada writer Muddu Moodubelle. Additionally, Harsha Beladi’s poetry collection “Onji Kana”, and the second edition of “Jeetige” – Tulu’s first book with over a thousand copies sold – were released.

Yogish Shetty Jeppu, founder of the Tulu Nadu Protection Forum, assured youth that veterans will always stand with them in the fight for Tulu’s recognition. Activist Roshan Renald declared unequivocally that even if cases are filed, there is no backing down from standing up for Tulu rights.

Satirist Vishu Srikera lamented that Tuluvas, who once welcomed everyone with open arms, are now being betrayed by the same people. He mocked the disinterest of political leaders, stating that if one compiled all the petitions submitted for Tulu causes, it would feed all of Tulu Nadu.

Sachin Shetty from Shutter Box Films pledged support, saying he would always rise up if injustice was done to Tulu.

Declaration for Annual Conclave

The event was presided over by Mahi Mulki, founder of the Tulu Cultural Research Foundation. He recounted historical events during Karnataka's unification when Tulu Nadu was merged with the state and highlighted the injustices faced by Tuluvas. He announced that the Tulu Nadu Conclave would be held annually going forward.

Special Guests and Felicitations

The program also saw participation from Uday Pooja of Jai Tulunad Organization, Bharat Ballalabhag from the Daiva Worship Preservation Forum, Praveen Alva of Alvakuto Band, and writer Kushalakshi V. Kulal.
