Karwar, Uttara Kannada – While coastal regions frequently host swimming and boat racing events, a unique fishing competition was organized near Baithkol, Karwar, to promote and preserve traditional fishing practices. The event attracted participants from across the state and beyond, with contestants using fishing rods to catch as many fish as possible within a four-hour window. One participant stole the show by catching an impressive 50 fish, drawing admiration from fellow competitors and spectators alike.

The Baithkol Young Fishermen’s Committee organized the event to educate and encourage the age-old method of angling. A total of 47 contestants participated, including those from Pune and Goa. The competition saw a significant increase in participants compared to its previous edition, highlighting growing interest in traditional fishing. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three performers. While some participants struggled to catch a single fish, others managed between 10 to 20, celebrating their success. This rare competition in the coastal belt is reviving a forgotten fishing method and attracting people from diverse communities, ensuring that the legacy of traditional fishing continues.
