Bengaluru: Motorists in Karnataka will have to shell out more at toll plazas starting April 1, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a 3-5% increase in toll charges. This annual revision, linked to inflation, will impact 66 toll plazas across the state. Key toll points such as Kaniminike and Sheshagirihalli (Bengaluru-Mysuru), Nangli (Bengaluru-Tirupati), Bagepalli (Bengaluru-Hyderabad), and Sadahalli (Bengaluru airport road) are among those set for a price hike. The toll adjustments depend on the concessionaire period, with notifications expected in the coming days, said K B Jayakumar, Project Director, NHAI Bengaluru.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is working on a policy to offer some concessions for toll charges on national highways. Meanwhile, Karnataka State Travel Operators’ Association president Radhakrishna Holla confirmed that the fare increase would be passed on to passengers, impacting travel costs. The hike follows a surge in toll collection nationwide, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari revealing that India’s total toll revenue reached ₹64,809.86 crore in 2023-24, marking a 35% rise from the previous year. The new rates are in line with the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, making them a routine yet impactful adjustment for commuters.
