The longstanding conflict between the Nellidadi Guttu family and the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) has resurfaced, highlighting the delicate balance between cultural preservation and industrial development. Recent discussions involving district authorities and MSEZ management aim to address concerns related to the Kantheri Jumadi Daiva worship site, a significant spiritual center for the local community.
Historically, the Nellidadi Guttu family, comprising approximately 300 members, has resisted relocation from their ancestral home and the adjoining 20 acres of land, despite it being acquired for MSEZ's phase one. Their steadfast refusal is deeply rooted in their faith and traditions. Laxman Chowta, the head of the family, emphasized their commitment, stating, "Our Daiva (the spirit they believe in) is against leaving the place. We will die here than go anywhere."
In recent developments, allegations have emerged accusing MSEZ officials of obstructing religious practices at the Kantheri Jumadi Daiva shrine. In response, a meeting was convened by the Member of Parliament Capt. Brijesh Chowta, bringing together Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan, members of the Nellidadi Guttu family, devotees, and activists. During the discussions, it was revealed that while land acquisitions had occurred, the shrine remained untouched, allowing uninterrupted worship. The Deputy Commissioner questioned the sudden emergence of issues, noting that rituals had continued without hindrance for years.
Representatives of the Nellidadi Guttu family acknowledged that although they had received compensation and relocated, they continued to perform rituals at the shrine with MSEZ's permission. However, recent changes in the permission process have caused confusion. Previously, monthly Sankranti rituals proceeded without issues, but now, MSEZ officials have directed them to seek approvals from their Chennai division, leading to uncertainties about future ceremonies.
Activist Srikanth Shetty highlighted additional challenges faced by the community, including restricted access to the shrine despite the existence of a road. He advocated for unrestricted entry to prevent the need for repeated permissions. In response, MP Brijesh Chowta emphasized the importance of ensuring that religious practices remain unobstructed. He instructed MSEZ Managing Director Suryanarayana to propose solutions within legal frameworks to facilitate uninterrupted worship.
MSEZ officials clarified that the land in question was acquired through the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) and that any resolutions would require governmental guidance. They assured adherence to government directives to address the community's concerns. The meeting concluded by urging MSEZ to provide a comprehensive list of feasible solutions, ensuring that the Kantheri Jumadi Daiva rituals continue without hindrance, thereby preserving the community's rich cultural heritage.
