Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during the presentation of the 16th budget on Friday, announced ambitious plans to boost the state's maritime infrastructure. A major highlight is the establishment of a Water Transport Museum and Experience Center in Mangaluru under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aimed at preserving the coastal region’s rich maritime heritage.

Alongside this, Mangaluru is set to witness the development of an international cruise terminal, a water metro, and a coastal berth, significantly enhancing water-based transport and tourism. The government is also focusing on similar projects at Manki port in Uttara Kannada, while Honnavar is set to emerge as a key shipbuilding hub.

In addition to these maritime advancements, the state is exploring river cruise tourism to tap into the economic and recreational potential of Karnataka’s waterways. Another major infrastructure push is the Karwar Naval Base Airport, where the land acquisition process is in progress, and construction is expected to begin within the year with the necessary funds already allocated. The CM emphasized that these projects align with Karnataka’s long-term vision of strengthening coastal connectivity, promoting tourism, and enhancing trade opportunities.
