In a groundbreaking move, Indian Railways has introduced the first-ever onboard ATM on the Manmad-CSMT Panchvati Express, marking a significant step under the Innovative and Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (INFRIS). The ATM, installed by the Bank of Maharashtra in an AC chair car coach, underwent a successful trial run on April 15, 2025, as announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X. The facility, aimed at enhancing passenger convenience, allows travelers to withdraw cash mid-journey across the train’s 22 coaches. Despite minor network disruptions between Igatpuri and Kasara due to poor signal in tunnel-heavy stretches, railway officials, including Bhusawal DRM Ity Pandey, reported positive results and expressed plans to monitor the ATM’s performance for potential expansion to other major trains.

However, the initiative has sparked a heated debate among passengers and online communities. While some applaud the modernization effort, others criticize it as a misplaced priority, pointing to persistent issues like train cleanliness, safety, and overcrowding. Social media reactions on X range from sarcastic remarks about the ATM’s utility to concerns over security, with users questioning how safe the machine will be on a moving train. Critics argue that resources should focus on fundamental improvements, such as better toilets and more general-class compartments, rather than what they call a "solution to a non-existent problem." As Indian Railways navigates this blend of innovation and public scrutiny, the future of onboard ATMs remains a topic of intense discussion.
