The Karnataka government's recent mandate requiring e-khata for property registrations has led to a significant decline in transactions, with urban centers like Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Mysuru experiencing a 95% drop. The e-khata system, introduced in September 2024 to digitize property records and curb fraudulent activities, has encountered technical glitches and a lack of public awareness, hindering property owners from obtaining the necessary documentation. Consequently, daily registrations at sub-registrar offices have plummeted from the usual 50-60 to just 5-6.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath highlighted the hardships faced by residents due to the e-khata mandate. He pointed out issues such as errors in property maps and discrepancies in ward numbers, causing unnecessary trouble for the public. Kamath has urged Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda to address these software glitches promptly. In response, the government has acknowledged the initial challenges and assured property owners that there is no immediate deadline for obtaining e-khata, aiming to rectify the situation and streamline the digitization process.
